Local Resources

Local Resources

Part of our commitment to living sustainably is sourcing our needs locally.  We want to share with you our favorite places.  And we’d love to hear some of yours!  Our goal is to grow this list as we meet local vendors in our community.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Walnut Acres (Meat CSA)

http://www.walnut4meat.com/

We’ve been a part of the Walnut Acres Meat CSA for 2 plus years now and love it!  With each share we get a mixture of beef, pork, chicken, and eggs.  We get the mixed bag and have enjoyed the variety of types and cuts of meat that we’ve gotten.  You can custom order exactly what you want and add on to your order.  They also sell a variety of organic spices and other homemade items.  Pick up is once a month on a Saturday to a variety of locations in the Chicago Western Suburbs.  If you sign up, let them know that we referred you 🙂

Sitka Salmon (Salmon/fish CSA)

http://sitkasalmonshares.com/

Get wild caught salmon and fish from Alaska delivered to your door in the Chicago area!  This one was new for us this past fall and it’s been so worth it.  Finding sustainably sourced fish in the midwest can be challenging so Sitka has been a great option.  Their website shares the stories of all the fisherman who are catching the fish and they definitely have a family and community oriented focus.

Three Plaid Farmers (Vegetable and herb CSA)

http://blog.threeplaid.com/

Three plaid is local farm in Winfield, IL that runs a small vegetable and herb CSA.  Joe and Carolyn are hardworking and diligent farmers hustling to give you the best produce possible.  In addition to many of the staple veggies they offer a variety of unique produce options if you’re looking to try some new things!  They have pick up spots around the Chicago area.

Rustic Roads Farm (Vegetable CSA)

http://www.rusticroadfarm.com/

Rustic Roads is in Elburn and has a large vegetable CSA as well as a variety of meat and eggs available for purchase.  It’s a fun farm to go out and visit to see the chickens and goats roaming in the front.  Shares are also available for pick up at the Wheaton French Market.

Earth First Farms (Apple CSA)

http://earthfirstfarms.com/

Get a variety of organic Michigan apples delivered September through November.  We loved sampling the different varieties each share and the gallon of Cider we received on our last share was a delicious treat!

Specialty Food

Mary’s Wholesome Living

http://maryswholesomeliving.com/

A locally owned small business providing a variety of small batch fermented foods with an emphasis on locally grown and organic items.

Heritage Prairie Farm

https://www.heritageprairiefarm.com/

Heritage Prairie is a local farm in Elburn, IL that features seasonal farm dinners with menu items harvested and prepared directly from their organic farm.  It doesn’t get more local than that!  They also offer a vegetable CSA and have a small farm store open year round that offers fresh produce along with other locally produced food items.

Prairie Food Co-op

http://www.prairiefood.coop/

Prairie Food Co-op is in the process of becoming a full service grocery store in Lombard, IL.  They will seek to provide fresh, organic, and sustainably grown foods with a focus on local farms and food producers.  The co-op structure allows you to become a partial owner which helps fund and launch the store and gives you some owner perks along the way.  We went to one of their informational meetings which was a great place to learn more and meet the people behind the co-op.

Clothing

We are unaware of any locally made farm to fiber operations in the area.  Let us know if you have any resources for us!  As of now, our clothes shopping is primarily done second hand.

Baby Items

A Baby Naturally

130 W. Willow Ave.

Wheaton, IL 60187

http://www.ababynaturally.com/

All of your diapering, baby wearing, toy, clothing, and hygiene needs for baby can be covered here!  They feature local vendors and many items made with natural ingredients from small companies.  We did a good portion of our baby registry here and have been very pleased!  They also offer an assortment of classes in their upstairs space for all things related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.  We strongly recommend Lisa’s Bradley Childbirth Class!

Pet Stores

Trellis Farm and Garden

2N492 Kirk Rd.

St. Charles, IL 60174

http://www.trellisfarm.com/

Trellis is a family owned farm and garden store.  They carry a wide range of natural pet food as well as everything you need for your backyard farm.  We go here because they have everything we need for our dog and backyard chickens.  The service is outstanding and our dog, Mr. Lukester, always loves the trip!
